As the world moves into the 21st century, Nepali society is plagued by various superstitions. No matter how many social campaigns have been launched, it has been made public that a husband and wife have been killed in Belauri of Kanchanpur on the charge of witchcraft. In the incident that took place last Friday night, neighbor Prakash Air paid Rs. Even though the constitution of Nepal has made clear provision for women's rights, many women who have been tortured on the charge of witchcraft in the name of superstition have to be killed, burnt, excreted, and beaten. The state has not been able to guarantee security even if innocent women are beaten, abused, and subjected to the social stigma on the charge of witchcraft. Recently, social crimes such as rape, trafficking, and violence against witchcraft have been on the rise. In such cases, impunity is being promoted because the victim is innocent and the torturer has access. Superstition has reached such a climax that even today people have to lose their lives unnecessarily on the charge of boxing.

The new constitution was promulgated despite various challenges and interventions to end social discrimination and superstition in Nepal. After the completion of the three-tier election, the slogan of establishing the rights of Singha Durbar in the villages was also chanted. However, inhumane crimes increased in society. It is the people's representatives who have been beaten and elected by the people on the charge of witchcraft. Two years ago, while celebrating International Women's Day on March 8, Radha Chaudhary, 18, was beaten for six hours in a Tharu settlement in Kailali on the charge of witchcraft. The locals applauded and saw the beauty of the barbarism. Police arrested the assailant but released him under the pressure of the mayor and ward chairman of Ghodaghodi municipality. After widespread protests over the incident, three people, including Ram Bahadur Chaudhary alias Bhole Baba, were sent to Kailali Jail following a court order. Again, the same Radha was beaten on the day of Lakshmi Puja on October 7 on the charge of witchcraft. Such superstitions are rooted in the tendency for women to be repeatedly harassed on charges of witchcraft and for the perpetrators to be acquitted under various pretexts.

As the number of such incidents has increased, the law enacted to provide for the charges and charges against witchcraft has become ineffective. The Civil Crimes (Code) Act provides for imprisonment for up to eight years and a fine of up to one lakh rupees for cruel and inhumane treatment on the charge of witchcraft. On top of this, there is a provision of life imprisonment for the crime related to duty life. Nepal has also declared an end to all forms of violence and discrimination against women. However, no matter how much political change has taken place, various examples have confirmed that social superstitions have not diminished.

The practice of witchcraft is interrelated with our social structure. Because, where there are poverty and deprivation, illiteracy, and backward settlement, witchcraft seems to be rampant. Single women, Dalit, Madhesi community, women with physical disabilities are more oppressed. The upper-class women who have access to food, influence, and influence have never been heard of as witches. Women have to suffer from the tendency to exploit the weaker sections by accusing them of witchcraft in order to maintain their power. It is the responsibility of the state to eradicate such superstitions. Therefore, in order to discourage such superstitions and evil practices, it is inevitable for the state to take action against the perpetrators.
